We fed hundreds this evening

Good evening. Edna Martin Christian Center just completed hosting its 7th annual Thanksgiving meal. The chef reported that we served approximately 350 people and more than 400 meals. A big THANK YOU goes to members of First Baptist Church of Indianapolis for providing the food and serving the dinner. We also appreciate the many volunteers who helped this evening. On behalf of the staff, I also give thanks to all of you who continue to make great things happen in the Martindale Brightwood neig… Continue

Good Works Tour Stop #46: Edna Martin Christian Center by Isaac Randolph Faith Based Initiative Director for the State of Indiana

If you grew up in Indy and worked in the not-for-profit sector the Edna Martin Christian Center is a symbol of grassroots neighborhood support. I stopped by one morning to take a peek at their program and was not disappointed. I was met by my old friend Deputy Director of the Center Barato Britt who took me on a tour. EMCC was established as the East Side Christian Center by Ms. Edna Martin in 1941. She began working with low-income children after school in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhoo… Continue

A Summer Story

Each summer we see children from all walks of life. This summer we had a little boy, I will call him [Jay], who was born to a single mom with lots of physical problems. The child had no social skills and severe learning problems. We enrolled the little boy without completely knowing about his background. After we discovered his many social skill needs, we decided to give our best effort at giving him some basic social skills. Around the second week, we just thought we couldn’t help this child.… Continue

Quen's garden

One child was really excited let’s call him Quen. Quen is one of our Special Children and has been in program since he was 8 years old, he is mow 21. Quen looks forward to coming to the center every day because he knows he will be safe, have fun and eat a good meal. He has now started to get a little restless in the class room all day and asked me… Continue

Rites of Passage Class: Reaching out to those in our community

As some of you remember our Rites of Passage classes have started and we are very excited about them. One of the requirements is to do a service project once a month. This month they had to choose one of our seniors home to clean and spruce up the yard. They choose an 86 year old who had recently lost her only son who was also her caregiver. After many “I don’t want to” comments they went over and did a beautiful job. The children were surprised that they were able to do something so small and m… Continue

Ronald's story

Over the years we have strived to fulfill our mission through the various programs we offer. Whether it is providing a safe haven for children or reaching out to the community at large through our social service program. The scriptures tell us to “train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it." Over the years, Edna Martin Christian Center has been the training ground for young people in our community. Over the years EMCC has planted seeds within the part… Continue

Why Leadership and Legacy?

You may have read that the focus of our summer program is Leadership and Legacy. It focuses on learning to be a leader by serving. Growing up, I was fortunate enough to meet several people who took an interest in me and my friends on my street. That's how I started working as a reporter at the Indianapolis Recorder at age 13 and got involved in several other activities in the neighborhood EMCC serves--Martindale-Brightwood. My family and mentors stressed the importance of me recognizing my gifts… Continue

Join Our Faith in Action Movement

Edna Martin Christian Center is a neighborhood center that provides programs and services to the residents of the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood on the near north-eastside of Indianapolis. In everything we do, we make sure that our intent is to share God's grace and love. Our hope is that we provide the resources, knowledge and skill for our neighbors to become healthier, wiser, free, more autonomous, and more likely themselves to give back. In the end, we hope our work draws people closer… Continue
