2009 Leadership & Legacy Summer Program was a Great Success!

The Edna Martin Christian Center Leadership and Legacy Summer Program, which was held from June 6th thru August 8th, afforded 130 Martindale-Brightwood community youth a summer full of character building, academic, artistic and faith learning activities.

The goal of the Leadership and Legacy series was to teach youth how to become integral members of their society. As a home mission to the American Baptist Churches, youth first received faith instruction on site during morning devotionals. In addition, the children were engaged in over 100 hours of mathematics literacy and reading as the Indianapolis Algebra Project assisted with the mathematic tutoring and National City representatives made financial literacy fun and understandable for youth on their own level.

Furthermore, the campers participated in 11 community service activities in their neighborhood and across the country. On a local scale, Summer Camp participants initiated a "Go Green" program making the Center recycle friendly and helped to maintain a Center garden. Through the Neighborhood Action Program & National Ministries Youth Leadership Conference the youth were trained in and demonstrated leadership through community clean up. Also, many of the Center's aspiring leaders raised funds in support of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, donating $100 towards cancer support via the Indianapolis affiliate. Nationally, several youth attended the National Ministries Ecumenical Work Week III, helping to rebuild three New Orleans homes.

In addition to artistic and communal activities, personal health was addressed as Camp attendees were fed two wholesome meals per day and also participated in physical activities to include swimming, roller skating and various other park activities. Many of the youth also attended Indian Creek Camp during the final week, enjoying outdoor activities which also helped to connect them with God.

The 2009 Leadership and Legacy Summer Program was a great success. Many youthful lives were touched and the work will continue on as we commence the After School Program.
