As we started our summer program we had many children bring in their registration forms with much excitement, geared up and ready to start the summer. One child was really excited let’s call him Quen. Quen is one of our Special Children and has been in program since he was 8 years old, he is mow 21. Quen looks forward to coming to the center every day because he knows he will be safe, have fun and eat a good meal. He has now started to get a little restless in the class room all day and asked me to help him find a job. My first thought was who will hire him? Then I remembered his love for plants and flowers and my mind started rolling.
I called a couple of shops in the neighborhood but they could not hire him. Then I called on one of our collaborative partners that runs the community garden on 17th and Sheldon and she gratefully accepted Quen on her staff. When I told him I had got him a job he jumped up and down and asked where is it when I said at the garden he said, ”thank you every much Ms. Evelyn and I will do my every best everyday.” He then turned around and said, “when I get my first check I’ me going to take you to lunch.” Well we are on week number three at this writing and we still haven’t gone to lunch (smile).
This is what the Edna Martin Christian Center is all about helping others to help themselves. Quen not only get paid in money but he is able to take food home from the garden everyday.
Continue to bless us with your prayers and many gifts that you bring to us daily and we will continue to do our part of blessing others.
