You may have read that the focus of our summer program is Leadership and Legacy. It focuses on learning to be a leader by serving. Growing up, I was fortunate enough to meet several people who took an interest in me and my friends on my street. That's how I started working as a reporter at the Indianapolis Recorder at age 13 and got involved in several other activities in the neighborhood EMCC serves--Martindale-Brightwood. My family and mentors stressed the importance of me recognizing my gifts and talents and supported me in developing them. They also stressed passing on what I learned with others so they could do the same.

This summer our EMCC youth will embark on a journey of understanding who they are, who they want to become and how they connect with others. We will start the program in the summer, and continue throughout the year.
I believe we all have a greater purpose. Therefore our group will work on improving themselves as people and learn more about their personal responsibility to one another in building up each other, each household, each community.

Of course the kids will have all of the fun activities of a traditional summer program such as swimming, tennis, class activities, and our signature camp at Indian Creek. They will also learn money management, trained in life skills and do civic activities. Our purpose is to ensure that they have the skills they need to grow and the opportunity to learn their gifts and talents from mentors. That's where our Leadership and Legacy Academy training comes in to help plan a path leading in the direction they should go; and hopefully when they are old they will not depart from it.
